The University Library of Ghent has a history of being a trendsetter in Digital Library technologies which have proven to become very successful products. Under the guidance of Herbert Van de Sompel, former head of automation, the digital library became an early bird in adapting new technologies, and co-developed the SFX linking service and Open URL standard. Ghent University was the first Belgian university to install a DSpace IR, and now works on other systems such as aDORe to store complex objects. Within DRIVER, the UGENT IR was the only Belgian IR with a high ingestion rate of full-texts, a good practice which has spread throughout Belgium within the first 18 months of DRIVER . The UGENT library played a leading role in the formation of a national network of IRs (DRIVER content providers), and will continue to do so in DRIVER-II. The momentum created by the national conference on Open Access Repositories in February 2007, will be further exploited in DRIVER-II, where UGent is mainly involved in Dissemination and Support Activities, as well as Discovery (User studies) and the development of validating tools.
